Barnhart and Nelson said the decision to renovate the 41-year-old building was based on the outcomes of a feasibility study conducted by the Office of Campus Planning and the MIT Capital Projects group. Historic house renovation sparks some fears, controversy | Local News

SALEM — An historic building with connections to Nathaniel Hawthorne has become the focus of controversy, as some preservationists back plans for a renovation and addition, while others are trying to prevent it.

As of Monday afternoon, an online petition to “Save the Grimshawe House” had garnered more than 4,100 signatures — but one of them was from the owner of the company doing the project.

Hill College House has come a long way from being designated as one of the “most-loathed” dormitories in the country. This week, its $80 million renovation was given the Award of Merit for Renovation/Restoration from the Mid-Atlantic chapter of the Engineering News-Record, a Manhattan-based magazine that analyzes and provides news for the international construction industry.
